Shrimp and Snails
Shrimp and snails play many different roles in any freshwater ecosystem. Although they look nothing alike many times they are doing the same job in your tank. In some aquariums they are the centerpiece animal. Other times they are janitors or the clean up crew. Shrimp are a wonderful live food for larger fish. Their young make a nutritious meal for nano or baby fish. There are several species of small to medium sized snails that do a great job at processing organic waste and keeping the glass clean. Keep in mind that snails overpopulating in an environment is almost always related to overfeeding or some kind of large food source. If the snails don't have a lot to eat they will not be able to sustain large numbers for long.
